Pete Deegan, LCSW

Hi, my name is Pete and I use he/him pronouns, identify as White, cisgender, heterosexual, and male. I am married, and am the dad of teenager. I grew up economically lower-class / working class, raised Irish-Catholic by an immigrant single parent, and was fortunate to have a large, supportive extended family. I am not currently practicing a religion, but I integrate elements of Buddhism in my spiritual work. Politically, I’m left-of-center, and have engaged in environmental, anti-racist, anti-war, and economic justice activism at various points in my life. That said, having lived in both rural and urban settings on the west coast and mid-west, I find it easy to talk to all kinds of people, and find it easy for them to talk to me. I became involved in the DIY punk music scene early in my teenage years as a musician and a fan, and this helped me see the value of being able to indulge in creativity, and to understand the wonderful things that people can do with minimal resources when they work together for a shared goal.

The path to better mental health is unique to each individual, and I value a diversity of approaches to healing, and recognize that people have utilized means of healing the mind long before the advent of modern psychotherapy. There's no one right way to feel better, and I value the cultural traditions clients call upon to integrate into their healing process.

I work with tweens, teens, younger adults, and older adults, and recognize that different life stages come with different challenges (and benefits!). I also utilize my training in conflict resolution and compassionate communication, in combination with therapeutic approaches, to assist families and couples in working through conflict. In my work I utilize Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, EMDR and mindfulness-based interventions to address issues such as anxiety, depression, and obsessive-compulsive disorder, as well as issues related to trauma, loss, attachment, addiction, and challenging life changes.
