Le Adams-Schoen, MA, LPC

My name is Le Adams-Schoen.   I am gender non-binary, gay, married, and a parent.  I am also white-bodied and female socialized.  I was raised in the Midwest, attended Catholic Schools and in a divorced, working/middle class family, while also experiencing a more affluent culture when visiting my non-custodial parent. My hope is that my personal journey will be as helpful as the skill development of becoming a therapist and supervisor, as I use both in the therapy room.  I have experienced throughout my life, how much our various identities and roles impact us, whether we have language for it or not, in addition to all of the regular human challenges.

I view counseling as encompassing our relationships to our families, our community, the broader society, and ourselves.  In a counseling session, I may encourage more compassion or more responsibility towards oneself, and I may invite examination of societal judgments. I want my clients to find true freedom to be themselves and feel their value.  These changes will be felt now and in generations to come.

Our society was built and prospered on a foundation of dehumanization.  Whether it was overt violence and exploitation, or prosperity and community being dependent upon sacrificing self and culture, I work with the assumption that each of us inherited/ingested norms against humanity and well-being.   My work with clients is about regaining our wholeness and sense of belonging, regardless of what societal narratives were ingested.  Much of this wisdom is held outside the therapy field, in movements like the civil rights movement and feminist and queer movements.   Becoming whole starts as an emotional experience, often through unwanted symptoms.
